How To Test Paint Samples Directly On Your Home Walls
OK Michelangelo, so you want to test your paint sample(s) directly on the wall?
Can it be done? The short answer is — yes! But there’s a few schools of thought on the subject …
One is from the contractor’s viewpoint. I’ve spoken with several painters who are not a fan of homeowners testing paint directly on the walls. Usually, it’s because of how the homeowner applies the paint. Their preferred method is to test on poster board, a technique I’ve discussed here.
Next, there are those in the camp who believe it is most accurate to test paint directly on the substrate/surface on which it will be applied.
So, let’s tackle this method.
First off, what color is your current wall color? If it’s white, the process is simpler and you’re good to go.
If you have color on your walls, that’s where it gets a liiiitle tricky. I’ve seen paint samples react with the current wall color to a point where it even alters the paint sample. 😱😱😱
For this reason, you could try one of two methods. Either apply the paint directly on the wall using two coats and see how it looks. If the color seems altered, try priming a small area next to the one you just painted and repaint. Then, see if there’s a difference.
And for the love of color …
Don’t tape off a square area on the wall when sampling paint! Feather out the edges.
Why?
Because those nicely taped off edges will leave a ridge which will need to be sanded before applying paint a.k.a. think small dust storm in your home. 🌪
And that by the way, is what drives your painter bonkers!
Now that your paint samples are up, stand back and observe at various times of the day with different lighting. If you’re testing directly on the wall, it’s also a good idea to test in different rooms for comparisons; i.e., northern exposure, southern exposure, etc. It’s important you love your color no matter which room or what time of day it is.
Are you happy with your new paint sample? Is it giving you the cohesive look that you wanted for your home? Or are you unsure? If unsure, professional advice is just a click away! 😉
